Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

Any of you who followed CES this year will know that there was a whole load of new Windows 8 tablets announced that we can expect to see once Windows 8 itself is actually released later on this year. Of course there is a few tablets out there that people have installed the Windows 8 developer preview on already. However I’m sure that many of you have got the Windows 8 developer preview up and running on your laptop which doesn’t have a touchscreen.

While you can still use Windows 8 without a touchscreen, the whole Metro UI experience isn’t as good navigating with a mouse and keyboard. So it would be nice to have a touchscreen tablet to try it out and get a real feel for Windows 8.

Well you can actually build your very own Windows 8 tablet if you like, all you’ll need is a touchscreen and an old laptop that you don’t mind taking apart!

Over at instructables some fella has posted about how he went about making his very own tablet so he could try out the Windows 8 developer preview.

Now it’s not exactly a work of art, and it’s a bit bulkier than traditional tablets, but hey it works! The process is quite straightforward really as you’ll see from the video below. But essentially all you do is disconnect your existing screen, attach a new touchscreen and sit it on top of the keyboard. Add a few nice bits of trim to hold everything together and you’ve got yourself a tablet!

Of course you’ll have to go get yourself a touchscreen and then take apart one of your laptops. Performance will also depend on the machine that you’re using but as we know, Windows 8 doesn’t require specs that are too high.

So are you willing to convert your laptop into a tablet to try out Windows 8?

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

Here at Windows 8 News, the team of editors are constantly working away in order to bring you the latest news and information about Windows 8. Of course the same goes for Windows 7 News where we’ve got a huge collection of themes, wallpapers, guides and enough tips to keep everyone happy. We’ve all got quite a bit of experience and knowledge when it comes to Windows that we share with you every day.

However, our resident MVP (Microsoft Valued Professional) Mike Halsey always seems to be one step ahead of us all.

Some of you may know of the Windows 7 Power Users Guide that Mike wrote for Windows 7.

The eBook is an extensive 170 page guide to Windows 7, written by Mike and is available for free to download (Download it here at Windows 7 News) This eBook has been a huge success and has had well over half a million downloads to date.

And now I’m delighted to announce that Mike will now be writing the Windows 8 Power Users Guide, and he’s been picked up by the international publisher APRESS. This new “Windows 8 Power Users Guide” will be for IT Pros and Users who want to master Windows 8. Of course since Windows 8 isn’t even out yet and the book is still in the early stages of development, most of the specifics have been kept under wrap, but I’ve been assured that there’s been nothing like this book before!

Here’s a few words from Mike himself in relation to the Power Users Guide Series as well as his reaction to being picked up by the international publisher APRESS:

I self-published my first Windows Power Users Guide in 2006 for Windows Vista, and it had a great review from ‘Windows Vista: The Official magazine’ in the UK that made it a real hit. This spurred me on to write the Windows 7 Power Users Guide, a free 170 page guide, which has had more downloads than I can count (the download counter on my website actually broke after half a million, so draw your own conclusions). To have the Power Users Guide name and format picked up by a major international publisher is a dream come true, and I hope it is also great encouragement to anyone wanting to write their own book for Windows or any other tech subject in 2012 and beyond.”

No doubt Mike will have a few more teasers for us between now and the release of the book, it’s great to see his book series has been picked up by a major publisher, and it’s brilliant that we have him on our team here at Windows 8 News and Windows 7 News.

I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing him every bit of success with it.

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

We’ve all got a good look at the new Metro UI that comes with Windows 8 thanks to the developer preview which Microsoft has made available to download. I’m sure many of our readers have installed Windows 8 and played around with it a bit. I think the new Metro UI is quite good, but I’m still not going to make the jump to using Windows 8 as my main operating system just yet. However there is a way that you and I can have the cool Metro UI in our browsers. Read on to find out how.

Windows 8 Metro UI

A plugin called EIGHT for Firefox, Chrome, IE and Safari – (in fact any browser according to the developer ) will allow you to set your browser start page so it looks like the Metro UI.

This nifty little plugin was created by Ľubomír Krupa. It provides quick and easy access to your favorite websites, and works similarly to the default start screens featured in a number of modern browsers. It’s very like Chrome’s and Safari’s only that it’s got the Metro UI instead. There’s plenty of customisation that you can do with the plugin as well.

Have a look at the video below to see it in action, and it also provides a detailed walk through on how to set it up

You’ll be able to customise this a good bit too, especially if you know a bit of code and CSS. You’ll be able to change the color scheme and such so as to match the current version of the Metro UI that Microsoft have in the Windows 8 developer preview.

You can download this plugin over at Deviant Art

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

While Microsoft did give us a nice little treat by providing us with a developer preview of Windows 8, they did forget to think about those who don’t speak English. Of course it’s understandable that Microsoft only released the developer preview in English as it’s still pre-beta software and is really only for testing purposes, but that doesn’t mean that the non-English speaking community can’t try it out.

While Microsoft doesn’t officially offer any languages packs for Windows 8, Martin has published a post over at Ghacks which talks about how you can get some. A fan project has been pulled together which is working on getting together as many language packs as possible that will work with Windows 8. At this moment they’ve currently got French, Spanish and Italian language packs for both the 32-bit and 64-bit edition of the Windows 8 Developer Preview.

Of course since these aren’t official languages packs for Windows 8, don’t be surprised if there’s the odd mistake and also if it interferes with Windows 8 in anyway. While it shouldn’t cause any problems, you can never be certain.

But if you really want to try out Windows 8 and you don’t speak English, then it’s definitely worth giving it a try.

The language packs are installed via the WDP Universal Language Installer which you can find here on the development website. You’ll have to download the language packs separately and then install them via this program

The way the developers have put these developer packs together is by converting Windows 7 SP 1 languages packs to work with the Windows 8 developer preview. Of course because Windows 8 is slightly different and has other features etc.. don’t be surprised if not everything is fully translated. But it’s better than nothing if you don’t speak English.

So if you fancy installing any of these language packs, head over to the site here for full instructions.

Of course if you want the official Windows 8 language packs, you’ll probably have to wait until Microsoft release the final edition of Windows 8.

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

I’m sure that plenty of you have got the Windows 8 Developer Preview up and running on your PC’s by now. You could possibly have followed this guide that I put together which shows you how to install Windows 8 in a virtual machine. Or you may have installed in on a partition in your hard drive. However I’m sure that a few of you haven’t got around to installing it just yet, or you’re planning on installing it on some other computer.

Well now there’s another handy little solution to make life that little bit easier for you. This quick guide will show you how you can install Windows 8 from a USB Flash Drive so you can bring it anywhere with you.

1. First off you’ll want to grab yourself a copy of the Windows 8 Developer Preview. You can download them from here.

2. Next up download the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. While this tool is specifically meant for Windows 7, it works just perfect with Windows 8 as well. This tool will let you copy your Windows 8 ISO to your USB Flash Drive. It’s pretty simple and straightforward.

You’ll need to have a USB Stick with at least an 8GB capacity and make sure you have taken all important information off of it because the tool will wipe it.

3. Simply follow the instructions that the tool provides you with when your run it. Essentially you’ll wipe your USB drive, copy the ISO and then make it bootable.

4. Now just plug it into the computer that you want to install Windows 8 on and boot from it. Sometimes you may have to tweak some settings in your BIOS or select your boot device by entering the boot menu at start up. (Generally you hit F10 or F2 at start up, it depends on your computer) Once you’ve done this, all you have to do is follow the Windows 8 installation instructions.

This method for installing Windows 8 should be much quicker than using a conventional DVD and it also means that you can install it on devices without a DVD drive like Netbooks and Ultrabooks.

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

In an earlier article, we demonstrated how you could install the Windows 8 Developer Preview with a dual-boot setup if your computer does not support virtualization. Now many are asking the question “How do I uninstall this?” It can certainly get annoying when you restart your system and you have to go through the Developer Preview setup and then you have 30 seconds to decide which operating system you want to use. If this doesn’t bother you and you want to keep the Windows 8 Developer Preview on dual-boot that is fine. If you are wondering how to get rid of it, this tutorial will guide you. After all, you still have time to re-install, especially if you burned an ISO image to a DVD or USB device. This is especially important if you did not like the Preview. Many did not and many did. Let us take a look at how to remove it entirely.

Rather than using the command line to change the BCD settings, we will use a utility called EasyBCD. Download here.

This makes this entire process as easy as clicking “Next” and so on, much like you would do with any other utility. It automatically launches upon installation. We want to delete the Windows 8 Developer Preview from the BCD. In the left pane, you will notice a button labeled “Edit Boot Menu”. Click this button to begin.
However, before you “begin”, please backup your entire system. This is not without risk. The last thing you want is an unbootable PC.

Use reliable backup software and use an external destination drive for the backup. Create a boot disk and a disk image for your system. That way, if anything goes wrong, you can boot from the disk and use the backup for recovery. This is something that you should have established on your PC already. If you do not, stop now and take care of this. Moving forward, after clicking “Edit Boot Menu”, you will see this:

Notice that, on this system, there is a list of only two boot loaders. One is Windows 7 Professional and the other is the Windows Developer Preview. Select the Preview to highlight it and then click the delete button. Naturally, there will be a confirmation prompt. Choose “yes” if you have backed up your system and you are ready to go.

Windows 7 will be the only entry in the database and it will need to be set as the default option.

Under Timeout Options, select the button “Skip the boot menu” unless you have another operating system in the list, e.g. a Linux distribution.

So skip the boot menu and “Save Settings”. You should see that bootloader settings have been saved successfully. Now when you reboot, which would be the next step, you should boot directly into Windows 7.
If you used either a partition or a VHD for the allocated space to Windows 8 Developer Preview, you will need to reclaim that space using the Disk Management Console snap-in. Once you re-format a partition, all data will be lost. When the Disk Management Console is loaded (Windows key +R), delete the volume which contains Windows 8.

Now all you have to do is format the drive and you are done. You will see an empty partition noted by a black-scratch header. You are now finished!

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

I’m sure plenty of you have installed the Windows 8 developer preview. So far it seems that people are more than happy with it, however I’m slightly annoyed with the new Metro UI at times because I’m only using it on my laptop without a touchscreen. I’m sure the experience is completely different on a touchscreen but I am yet to try it out so until then I’ll reserve my comment on it.

I’ve found it difficult at times to do simply things like even shutting down Windows 8 or searching for things. With Windows 7 it’s as simple as going to the start menu and everything is at your fingertips. But now everytime I click on that start menu it flips back to the Metro UI. That sent me looking for a solution, I wanted to be able to turn off the metro UI and that lead me to MetroController. It allows you to disable some or even all of the new Metro features in Windows 8.

This is a handy little piece of software. It allows you to either

Disable Metro UI, Start Screen, Explorer Ribbon UI and Enable the Old Start Menu

Or you can just disable the Metro UI, Start Screen and Bring back the old Start Menu but still keep the new Explorer Ribbon UI

So you’ve a bit of control over what you disable which is nice, as I do like the new Explorer Ribbon

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

Many people prefer to use Windows with keyboard shortcuts (and who doesn’t use Ctrl-C, Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V regularly). Windows 8 includes some new keyboard shortcuts for the new Metro UI. These can be very useful while you’re evaluating the new Operating system.

Where they come in very useful is when you’re using Metro with a mouse. Currently, swipes such as showing the charms on screen by swiping in from the far right of the screen don’t work with a mouse. This can make performing a task as simple as shutting down the computer complex. Here then are the, currently accurate, keyboard shortcuts for the Windows 8 Developer Preview.

Win + Spacebar : Switch the input language and keyboard layout

Win + C : Open the Charms

Win + D : Show the desktop

Win + E : open Windows Explorer

Win + F : Open the Search panel

Win + H : Open the Share charm

Win + I : Open the Settings charm

Win + K : Open the Connect charm

Win + L : Lock the computer

Win + O : Lock the screen rotation

Win + Q : Open the search pane

Win + R : Open run

Win + V : Cycle through toasts

Win + W : Opens the Settings search panel

Win + Y : Peek at the desktop

Win + Z : open the app bar

Win + Shift + V : Reverse cycle through toasts

Win + Enter : Launch the narrator

Win + PgUp : Move tiles to the left

Win + PgDn : Move tiles to the right

Win + Shift + . : Move the split to the left

Win + . : Move the split to the right

One useful function, especially when it comes to search is that from the Start screen you can simply start typing and Windows will open the search panel for whatever you type. This is an improvement on Windows 7 where you first needed to open the Start Menu before you could type a search request.

Don’t forget that Windows 8 is still pre-release software and all these keyboard shortcuts, as with every other feature at the moment can change in future versions and even with updates that will be issued through Windows update to the demo platform.

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

When I first made it to the Windows 8 Start screen desktop, I was a little confused about the different navigation shortcuts and techniques for finding my way around the menus and screens. While many of the old Windows shortcuts still work, there are some new ones to use. This is my next… has posted an article that details Windows 8 on a laptop with a keyboard and mouse as the means for navigation. What’s even more helpful is the list of shortcuts they have compiled which may help you guys with navigation. Here is the list:

The Start button takes you to Start Screen and lets you toggle between open apps

Alt-Tab cycles through apps in sequence, as usual

Arrow keys allow you to move through the Start screen

Windows + C brings up the Charm menu, as does hovering over the lower-left hand corner of the screen

Windows + F brings up the Search screen, though simply typing (when on the Start screen) is more convenient

Windows + Z in a fullscreen app brings up the contextual menus

Windows + D takes you to the desktop

Windows + L locks the PC, invoking the lock screen

Windows + P pulls up multi-monitor settings

Windows + I brings up the Settings charm

Windows + E invokes Windows Explorer, as ever

Windows + R brings up the Run prompt

Windows + Y makes all your open windows (and the Metro UI) transparent, so you can see the desktop beneath

Windows + X shows Windows Mobility Center, which appears to serve much the same role as the Settings charm but on the desktop instead

The Scroll wheel pans across Start screen, slowly

Right-click brings up contextual menus in a full screen app

Left-click on the Start screen brings up options to unpin, resize and uninstall apps

Ctrl-Alt-Delete summons a screen with options to shut down, switch users, log off or quickly open the Task Manager

Hopefully these shortcuts help you guys. I know I needed a few of them to help with navigation. Feel free to post some of your own in the comments below.

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

Right guys, so finally Microsoft have given us the Windows 8 Developer Preview to play around with (you can download Windows 8 here) and of course I’ve wasted no time at all and have installed it so I can start using it immediately. Now I haven’t installed it as my main OS , this wouldn’t be advisable since it’s still a developer preview and plenty needs to be fixed, so what I’ve done is install it in a virtual box on my Windows 7 machine.

Here’s what you need to do to get it up and running.

1. First off be sure to download a copy of Windows 8 and you will also need to download a copy of Virtual Box from here.

2. Now once you’ve installed Virtual Box, it’s time to set up your virtual machine. You should see this screenshot below when you start up virtual box

3. Next you want to click on the New icon ( top left – blue) this will begin the setup wizard, hit next and it will then ask you what it is you want to install. Fill in the details as I have in the screenshot below. (Note: select Windows 7 64 bit – not Other Windows OS as this won’t work, there will probably be an update for Windows 8 soon enough but it’s not an option at the moment)

4. After you’ve filled all this in, hit next and you will be asked how much RAM you want to allocated to the virtual box. I went for 1.5GB but depending on how much RAM you have you might want to increase or decrease this.

5. The next step will be allocating a virtual hard drive for Windows 8 to run on. The default is 20GB and this should be plenty. Unless you already have prepared a partition or Virtual Drive it’s easier just to let Virtual Box do the work for you. I opted for a VHD in this case instead of the default Virtual Box Drive Image but that shouldn’t make a difference.

You will also be asked if you want a Dynamic Drive or Fixed Drive. I’d leave it as a dynamic drive. This means that the drive will increase in size until it reaches the max size you allocated for it.

After that you will be asked what size you want the drive. I left mine as the default 20GB.

6. Now once you click next you’ll be asked to confirm that you want to create these virtual drives, go ahead and confirm this and then we can get on to installing Windows 8.

7. Once you get back to Virtual Box you will see a new Machine has been added. Highlight that machine and then click Start. This will boot up the machine and run the first boot setup wizard. It’s now that you will be asked where you would like to install an OS from. Select the Windows 8 Developer Preview ISO image from wherever you saved it.

8. Click next and the Windows 8 setup wizard will begin.

Just simply follow these steps and then accept the license agreement.

9. Windows will ask you if you want to upgrade or do a custom install. The answer here is to select Custom install as we are installing the OS from scratch.

10. You will then be asked to confirm where it is you want to install Windows 8. The Virtual hard drive you created earlier should be the default option.

11. After this then Windows 8 will begin to install itself. All you have to do is wait and let it do its thing and enter information when asked.

Congrats you’ve now installed Windows 8 on your system! Have fun playing around with it.

Posted on Windows 8 News, Rumors & Tips

When Windows 8 comes out it’s bound to cause a great deal of excitement in the tablet market. For the first time there will be an excellent and truly viable Windows tablet operating system and it’s bound to shake up the market. It’s also very likely to cause a great deal of confusion though and this is because Windows 8 on Intel chips and Windows 8 on ARM chips will be very different beasts. They’ll operate in different ways, run different software and be updated differently.

So what will be the main differences and how can you decide which one will be best for you? I thought I’d detail what the expected differences will be here and give you a quick guide.

The Main Differences

The main differences between the two platforms are as follows…

Intel

Like a traditional PC, able to run all your existing applications

Probably a worse battery life than ARM tablets

Will be updated regularly through Windows Update

Could still be prone to viruses and malware as it’s still ‘traditional’ Windows

Problems in the OS can still mean you’ll have to reinstall Windows occasionally

ARM

Cannot run any existing PC apps, will only run apps written or compiled for ARM and available in the Windows Marketplace

Excellent battery life

Will probably receive less regular updates

Will be very resilient to viruses and malware being ‘not traditional Windows’ and with tighter app control from Microsoft

Windows on a Chip means it will never need reinstalling

Content Creator or Consumer

The first question to ask yourself is if you are a content creator or a consumer. Traditionally PC users are content creators because we all use them at work. Applications commonly used for this include Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and so on. If you are primarily a content creator and this forms the bulk of what you will do with a tablet, then an Intel chip would seem the best option. If however you would just want a tablet for down hours and a little light web browsing a gaming, then ARM would be the best option.

Tech Head or Technophobe

If you are a tech savvy person, used to installing and troubleshooting problems with Windows then you probably won’t mind using Windows 8 on an Intel tablet. You’ll probably already have a USB DVD drive or the Windows installer on a pen drive. For these people then Intel would be something that you wouldn’t notice any difference with. Most people these days have got used to an operating system on a chip in devices such as smartphones and the iPad. These people don’t want to have to waste time fixing the OS when things go wrong. They want a consumer electronbics device, and why shouldn’t they get it? For these people then Windows on ARM would be the only option.

Using External Hardware

If you will want to use external hardware with your tablet though then you can probably forget the ARM devices as the chances these will support that hardware is slim to none. You can expect USB Pen Drives, external hard disks and DVD drives to work, but printers will probably be off the menu. I have a Windows 7 tablet that has a TV tuner plugged into a dock in my bedroom so that I can use it as a small TV. You can probably rule this particular usage out for ARM devices.

General Flexibility

There can be no doubt then that tablets running Windows 8 on Intel chipsets will be far more flexible and adaptable than Windows 8 running of ARM. It will also take a while for ARM apps to appear on the platform too. There are downsides to this though which include a far higher vulnerability to viruses and malware, and an non-embedded operating system that can easily crash and need repair.

Conclusions

In all I see the choices between Windows 8 on Intel and Windows 8 on ARM to be as complex for consumers as the different versions of Android are for them now. Both platforms will have their benefits and both will have their problems. Before buying a Windows 8 tablet then you’ll need to think very carefully about exactly what you will want to use it for, when and where you will use it before making your choice. Don’t let the sales person sway you, think carefully because if you don’t and you get it wrong, you could be making a very expensive mistake.

Windows 8 is coming in the spring of 2012, bringing with it a whole new interface. The Windows 8 desktop is taking a lot of cues from Windows Phone 7, by implementing the Metro UI and live tiles.

Not everyone thinks this will be a good desktop interface and it looks aimed at tablets. I found three free programs that can let you get a feel for the Windows 8 interface on your current Windows 7 desktop.

Mosaic

Mosaic is in the alpha stage – so it’s still pretty limited. I found that it works best on the 32 bit version of Windows 7 over the 64bit version. Since it’s still in the alpha stage, a lot of the
widgets currently lack functionality. It’s very basic in terms of what you can do with it, but you get a good idea of the look and feel of the Metro UI on your desktop.

In addition to the widgets you can pin applications and websites to the desktop. The tiles can be positioned where you want them and you can scroll to the right as you add tiles.

Mosaic

Download

Zetro VS

This program is more of a Windows 7 theme based program. However unlike other Windows 7 themes that usually are prepackaged, this one requires a bit more work. You have to run a patch file and then move a copy of the theme to the themes folder in Windows. I found Mosaic easier to run and did a better job at mimicking the Metro UI tiles, as I ended up installing three different things to get the end result.

In the end you get a lot more functionality out of the tiles however.

Zetro VS

Download

STDU Explorer

In addition to the tile based start screen, Windows 8 will be adding a ribbon interface into the explorer window. The STDU Explorer adds a ribbon interface for Windows Explorer. It is not the same as the ribbon interface for Windows 8, but it will give a user the idea of what it will be like to use the ribbon in Windows Explorer.

It’s a simple download of an install package. This is a standalone application and will not run if you open up Explorer normally. You will have to click on the executable to get the ribbon.

STDU Explorer

Download

Many people are not that excited to see the new interface that Windows 8 promises to bring us. However using these three free tools can pave the way for someone already using
Windows 7, to make a transition easier. Just keep in mind that these are all still development tools and will not reflect the actual user experience with Windows 8 once released.
